Description
Race Training Course
The Race Training Courses at PWSC are designed for students who can sail but have had little or no experience of racing yachts. The course has been designed by Mike Downard to introduce newcomers to, the BASICS of yacht racing, in sports boats or yachts. If you complete one or two of these courses you will find that suddenly racing makes sense and if you want to do more you will find lots of opportunities to join other Phuket based Regattas. The main elements of racing are set out below:
- The race course - an introduction to how a course is set and what you have to do to complete a race
- The Start - An explanation of the process of how a yacht race start is conducted
- Simple Rules of Yacht Racing - Beginners need some simple rules to keep out of trouble
- The first leg - Going to windward - close hauled course and sailing on the tell tales - when to tack - mast rounding
- The off-wind legs - sailing techniques off wind and the rules regarding boats at marks and avoiding collisions
- The final windward leg to finish - rounding the final mark and heading up to close hauled taking the shortest route to the finish line
- VHF radio and Flags sequence - the race start and communications
